Sketching Stories
From time to time, Red makes sketches in his special sketching book. Red loves sketching, but he's still learning.
These are quick sketches, but each one has a story behind it.
Under The Tree
I often sit under a large tree on a deck at my high school, where I hang out with friends. One time, when I was there alone, a lot of birds were hanging out with me around the tree. Someone even left their running shoes on the deck. Later on, someone showed me a card deck of their Yu Gi Oh cards. I don't play Yu Gi Oh, but it's interesting. I tried to capture these images to remind me of the day.
Athletics Day
Like everywhere in the world, New Zealand schools hold an annual athletics day. Students hate it, so schools make attendance compulsory. It's also held in the heat of the summer. Halfway through the athletics day, my friend and I started feeling sick from being out in the sun too long. So we called our parents to leave early. My friend even pulled out a Nintendo Switch while waiting. I tried sketching my experience.
A Dying Flower
I had an image in my head of a flower one day. But that flower was dying for some reason. Was it because the flower was not looked after properly? Or does the flower just need a friend to help it bloom again? Who knows what has happened to the flower.
Defending The Power Plant
I imagined an apocalyptic world where three-quarters of the global population were robots. These robots were also programmed to kill humans. One of the locations was a power plant – the only source of electricity to run an entire country. The defending soldiers at the power plant were met with a rain of bullets wave after wave. Multiple soldiers risked their lives defending the one power source for their homes. During the final wave, only one defending soldier was left standing. Then, a giant robot also appears. For the sketches, I created two different endings. Either the last soldier throws a grenade into the barrel of the giant robot's gun, or he climbs to the top of the giant robot and takes out the main control system located in its head.
A Trail To Make
Another apocalyptic story sketched out. There was a man who spent his time surviving in the snowy forest. The majority of the time, he is looking for shelter while also defending himself against enemies that he may encounter. But his main quest is finding his loved one, who he keeps a photo of with him wherever he goes.
Notebook
My sketch book had a strap to keep the book closed. But when I play with the strap, it's as if I am playing a 1 string instrument, the string makes different tunes. So it gave me a funny idea of turning a notebook into a musical notebook. The notes play from the strap of the book.
Overlayed Pony Land
Had a random idea of having a random pony character singing a song. Then had an idea that popped into my head where her form would be hidden by an overlayed sketch of land and terrain, with her hair is part of a river and swamp. Her snout can be a small canyon. Not the greatest overlay effect sketch, but it's my random imagination.
Emotions
Had an imagination of a female anime character in a world where she works as a hotel staff. So I created different emotions for her. Even though they may not be a clear image of what she actually looks like.
Last Breath
Wanted to practice drawing human characters. When I created this male character, I imagined him in a poor neighbourhood, living in poverty, in a low–quality sheltered home—actually just a shed. Every day, he scavenges for food and resources, making the most of his life until his last breath.
The Polygon Boy
Simple and strangely shaped character with unique ears. Had an image of a cartoon boy who is shaped in a unique way with 3D polygon shapes. He spends his time in a creative world where he can create anything with the power of 3D modelling. The only limit is his imagination.
A Simple Fellow
Not a completed sketch. But I imagined a character with a fine moustache who spends most of his time in his own palace while also being an event host for many things. He also likes wearing rich, fashionable and formal clothing. But he doesn't like making things complicated. He tends to make everything as simple as possible to ease his mind and thinks others should do the same.
Tic Tied Toe
Two simple characters competing with each other at numerous rounds of Tic Tac Toe (Naughts & Crosses). They constantly end their games in a tie, leading to some heated arguments, making their rivalry even more fierce.
Thin Ice
Sketched concepts of the main character and logos for different communities or groups, and a shelter. Thin Ice is a short film idea which led me to sketch in my sketchbook. The characters will be anthropomorphic creatures. The main character is part of the Merchant Alliance, which is a trading company. But the merchant was tasked to take a long journey and reach the next city to earn their income. During their journey, a blizzard blazes through the snowy mountains, forcing the merchant to take shelter. They decided to wait until the blizzard settled. That is until a group of bandits appeared looking for loot. The bandits saw the merchant, which led to a heavy gunfight. The merchant was lucky enough to find a weapon in the shelter to defend themself. After the blizzard settled, and they dressed a few wounds from the fight, they could continue their journey.
The Woman of Nature and the Man from the Saharas
Sketched two characters in one page. Both separate stories. The woman I imagined had spiritual powers that can make nature spread across the lands and help keep the peace. She was born at the time after humans became extinct which allowed her to bring life back to the planet without the corrupted humans heating the globe.
The man from the Saharas worked as an armed guardsman for a desert town. Occasionally he was either tasked to stand guard at the gates, or tasked to take patrols outside of town while fighting the heat.
Land Sketch
Had an image in my head of a clean river that travels all the way to the horizon. The sun beaming across the terrain. There are snowy mountains in the background. It's a bit of a relaxing view to imagine, so I sketched the terrain. Even tried to sketch the beams of the sun.
Totem of the Witch Doctor
I first saw this totem-like object back at high school through an art classroom window. I saw the totem as a witch doctor's decoration. It was coloured in pitch black on most parts with white or red outlines. Even other parts of the body are dark red. The totem even looked like it was wearing a cloak, revealing its claw sticking out of the totem.
Spec Ops Space Combatant
I first imagined the character wearing a dark space helmet with two filters fitted on his armour plated mask. He does special operations for a space police force gathering intelligence while also protecting the colony, just in the shadows.
The Unbeatable
An underworld fighter born in a cyberpunk world. He lives poor in his own apartment while also living his life as a money winning fighter. Fighting everyday, winning rewards, until he falls into debt from the harsh taxes set by the government. But he is tired of having to live as a fighter and wishes for an easier life without the strict laws and policies set by the corrupted government.
The Mother of Darkness
I saw a 3D challenge from a YouTuber named Pwnisher called "Kinetic Rush". It was to create a 3D parkour animation in a stunning environment. I was too late to apply for the challenge, but it did not stop me from having some ideas. Had this idea of a very massive scary beast who lives in the darkness. This beast also tries to stop a survivor from escaping the dark. The only thing that can be seen from the creature are the white glowing eyes and mouth.
A Frenchman
Had an image in my head of a man who is French who lived around the same time as Napoleon in the 1780s. He mostly spends his time attending parties and dancing at night at clubs while also being a formal servant for the royals. That is until the French revolution came about.
Assassin In The Woods
I imagined this character as a rogue assassin who lurks in the woods at night. He spies on those who go past his forest while also being a thief or assassinating every possible enemy he runs into.
Modelling Is Easy
I use Blender a lot. Everything in Blender starts with a cube. You can make anything from a simple cube. I made this sketch when I was thinking about making things from cubes.
Kuma Concept Sketch (Blades Against Spirit)
Blades Against Spirit is one of the short films I plan to work on. Kuma is one of the characters in the short film who looks after his two sons, Sheso and Kei. Kuma works as a farmhand on his own farm, living a happy life. That is until the raid that takes place that burns down his village.
